Building on the Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Program, APPS focuses on the support workers scope of practice in relation to the foundational concepts of Hospice Palliative Care.

Throughout three, 3-hour sessions, the learner will discover ways to enhance communication with the person, family and team members, develop skills required for effective team functioning and self care, and learn strategies for relieving common end-of-life symptoms.


Health care provider in a supportive role caring for people with a progressive, life-limiting illness (i.e. Personal Support Worker, Health Care Aide, Recreational Therapist, Volunteer, Social Worker, etc.).


The Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Program - Core Stream

Completion Requirements:

  • 100% attendance at the three in-person sessions
  • Active participation in classroom activities
  • Completion of two practical application assignments
  • Sharing of practical application assignments with other learners at the beginning of session two and three
  • Completion of evaluation after each session

Performance Objectives:

  1. Develop trust and therapeutic relationships with the people and families you care for
  2. Learn effective ways to communicate with people with cognitive impairments
  3. Identify your role in maintaining confidentiality
  4. Enhance your team communication skills
  5. Learn ways to recognize and manage conflict
  6. Develop a self-care plan
  7. Appreciate the importance of the support worker role in observing and reporting issues in the physical domain
  8. Learn strategies for relieving pain, breathlessness, confusion and other symptoms
